Jim and Juli Boeheim Foundation: 19th Basket Ball recap

The Jim and Juli Boeheim Foundation Basket Ball, also known as #theboeheimball or the Gala, was held on Saturday, April 28th at the Turning Stone.  This was the Foundation’s 19th year holding the Ball.  With seven hundred guests and half a million dollars raised, there is no doubt their vision to help the community and its children has stayed as clear as it was when the organization first started.   The Jim and Juli Boeheim Foundation, supports not only cancer research and advocacy, but at risk children in our community. The Basket Ball, is their main fundraising event, which over the last nineteen years, has raised seven million, it all stays here in our CNY community.  Allow me to “show you” a recap of the night….

The VIP reception, there is something about having three open bars, stocked with top shelf liquor at a very intimate reception.  Guests are greeted by Jim and Juli at the Orange Carpet, where they get the opportunity to have their pictures taken with them.  Guests get to take their picture home, the same night; not too shabby.  As if three open bars and pictures with Jim and Juli wasn’t enough, VIP guests also have the opportunity, to use those expensive phones, to take selfies with their favorite player and even chat with them; It is a very relaxing atmosphere.  The General reception, immediately follows the VIP reception and Jim and Juli are ready to meet their guests at the General reception right at 6p (this is very impressive – It is a hike, and there are not airport cars there, just saying! ) Props to the event coordinators! Ok back to the recap.

The General reception is very active, at this reception is where everyone one meets, where reporters are seen interviewing the coach, guests get the option of having their picture taken with the entire Syracuse Men’s Basketball team, they get to mingle with old friends, make new friends, check out Silent Auction items, enjoy drinks (two bars at the general reception) and hor’dorves, as well as taking selfies with Jim and Juli at the greeting area.  Can you believe that even with all of this going on, I can still find you to take your picture!? I am good, just saying! 🙂

Let’s move onto the program! LIVE Auction

As it is tradition, to fans delight, the Syracuse Men’s Basketball team shared the stage with Jim and Juli.   It was, at least to me, super cute to see the player’s shy faces as Jim, highlighted each one of them and their accomplishments this 2018 season.  A part of the night which deserves a great and heart-felt mention is the honoring of former Administrative Assistant, Kelly Seubert.   Jim and Juli shared how they will keep Kelly’s memory alive: Not only was she honored with a patch on all game uniforms, for the season, the coaching staff wearing a commemorative pin designed to look like the patch, but also donations which were made to the foundation instead of flowers (Kelly’s wish) were used to build medical supplies cabinets.

Kelly’s husband and sons.

These cabinets, which were custom built and display the letter “K”, will be stationed at hospitals and will include various supplies to make hospital’s patients stay, a bit more comfortable. Donations were also made at the live auction to keep these cabinets stocked and distributed to local hospitals.

This year’s emcee’s were Associate Head Coach, Adrian Autry and Assistant Coach, Gerry McNamara.  Live auction items included, Dinner with the Legends of SU Basketball, 2018 NBA Finals Game w/Private Charter, which auctioned off for forty-thousand dollars, and my personal favorite, a Turks & Caicos Vacation (visit link to see all live auction items: https://basketball18.auction-bid.org/microsite/items).

How cute is this!?

Adorable

Jim & Juli lighting it up with their guests

The night continued to my favorite part, dinner and dancing! It is so energizing to see couples of all ages boogie down! Prime Time Horns, owns it every year! Even Jim and Juli can’t resit the sound of those horns!   It is a great, great time. AND………. that open bar stays active until the end of the night! Just saying…

Although I have been photographing the Basket Ball for five years now, I am always surprised at how smoothly this event runs.  All transitions are seamless, from the VIP reception to dinner and dancing, to bids collection and distribution.  Shout out to Kelly Taylor, former Foundation Administrator and Rachelle Luckette, Foundation Administrator, and of course, to the volunteers for all they do to make this event run so smoothly.  It is great working with all of you!

Last but not least, Shout out to the Turning Stone Staff! It is sooo great working with them; anytime I have a question, there is always someone around to happily answer it. Love working with them as well.

One of the perks of being an event Photographer, besides meeting new people, is learning about behind the scenes projects and happenings in our community.  I had the opportunity of photographing The Summit Federal Credit Union’s Taft Road Branch Grand Opening;  They not only celebrated having a new and improved branch, but they also celebrated the community and two great organizations.  The Jim and Juli Boeheim Foundation got presented with a check for $6’700 and Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund of CNY got presented with a check for $10’800.

“The money collected was a joint effort between top Taste of Syracuse sponsors during the “I Heart Orange” and “Pink Power” themed promotions.  Donations were collected from The Summit Federal Credit Union, Tops Friendly Markets and Kinney Drugs.”

Adrian Autry, Assistant Coach for Syracuse University, was present making fans pretty happy with pictures and autographs.  The Summit also raffled a 5 day cruise to the Western Caribbean!

ana gil-taylor Photography: Jim and Juli Boeheim Gala recap

Oh what a night, late April, back in 2016, what a very special time for the Jim and Juli Boeheim Foundation, as I remember, what a night! Ok ok, that was inspired by the Four Seasons Band, but it is so fitting here!  This was the 17th year gala for The Jim and Juli Boeheim Foundation and it was a hit! Held at The Turning Stone Hotel and Casino, on April 30th 2016 and hosted over 800 guests.

The Gala raised over half a million dollars for our community – This is Syracuse, NY, ladies and gentlemen!  The Gala is one of The Jim and Juli Boeheim Foundation main fundraising events and all proceeds funds their grant program which supports many local organizations.  Among these are: The Boys and Girls Club and Clear Path for Veterans.

There was an added bonus for Jim and Juli this year, which made their night even more special.  This was the first time in seventeen years that their kids attended the Gala. One could definitely see the excitement on both of their faces throughout the night, but especially on the dance floor!  Here is how the night went.

The night started with the VIP reception.  The reception included pictures with Jim and Juli at “The Orange Carpet” and the opportunity for VIP guests to snap a picture with their favorite Basketball player.  Gourmet hors d’oeuvres circled the room and three bars decorated each corner of the room. They definitely needed those three bars this year; that VIP room was packed! I wonder if that had anything to do with the great season the Syracuse Men’s Basketball team had?  Or perhaps it was to take pictures with Juli? She looked STUNNING on that red dress. ana gil-taylor_ Boeheim_Ball 2016-0152ana gil-taylor_ Boeheim_Ball 2016-5183

ana gil-taylor_ Boeheim_Ball 2016-5187ana gil-taylor_ Boeheim_Ball 2016-0159A general reception followed the VIP reception. All guests meet and greet Jim and Juli as well as browse through an assortment of well balanced silent auction items. This included these Yankee stadium seats from the old stadium, Trevor Cooney’s sneakers, headshot packages (from your truly), high end bow-ties from J Allen Inspired to a custom stylist consultation from The Small Town Stylist, a one of a kind ring handcrafted from the #44 key to the historic Hotel Syracuse by JoJo Rings. Of course, a great variety of sports memorabilia for all those sports fans such as, a Final four signed poster of both Men’s and Women Basketball teams and a presidential picture of coach Boeheim. As you can see, there is absolutely something there for everyone to bid on, well planned.

ana gil-taylor_ Boeheim_Ball 2016-0040At the general reception, guests also got an opportunity to have their picture taken with the team, a very popular attraction, I may add.  This year, as predicted, the line was the longest I have ever seen it! But guests patiently waited for their turn to take their picture with their Syracuse Men’s Basketball Final four team – Go SU! ana gil-taylor_ Boeheim_Ball 2016-0233

Now to my second favorite part of the night, the LIVE Auction! The Live Auction is like a comedy show, I love it!. Jim and Juli’s on stage presence and chemistry is phenomenal! Add American Sportscaster and radio personality, Dan Patrick as an emcee and well, you’ve got yourself a show! ana gil-taylor_ Boeheim_Ball 2016-5612ana gil-taylor_ Boeheim_Ball 2016-5682ana gil-taylor_ Boeheim_Ball 2016-5430

Congratulations to Neil, Helene and Amanda Gold; 2016 Basket Ball MVP’s. ana gil-taylor_ Boeheim_Ball 2016-5357_MVP

Part of the live auction was really emotional with Pearl’s passing and Griffin’s Guardian’s story. but the fact that guests were given an opportunity to make a difference by donating to help others, definitely lightened it up.  Donations from $500 to $5000 made an accumulative grand total of forty-thousand dollars raised for Griffin’s Guardians; simply amazing!ana gil-taylor_ Boeheim_Ball 2016-5597Brian Hanlon, sculptor of the Plaza 44 statues and Syracuse University Football coach Dino Babers, joined the stage to auction off four replicas of those statues. Pretty cool stuff!ana gil-taylor_ Boeheim_Ball 2016-0634  This years entertainer was Robert Channing, America’s got talent speed painter. He wowed the crowd with three speed paintings:  Syracuse Basketball Team, “Super 7” which was signed by all 7 players, Jim Boeheim, and a painting of Pearl, which Jim purchased to have on display at the Melo Center. The other two paintings were auctioned off and raised seventeen thousand dollars for the Foundation.ana gil-taylor_ Boeheim_Ball 2016-0671

Now on to the Dance floor! My absolute favorite part of the night! I tell you, it gets harder and harder every year not to break my dance moves on that floor! Although the dance floor was packed, room was made for Jim and Juli to break it down and get jiggy with it!

ana gil-taylor_ Boeheim_Ball 2016-5950ana gil-taylor_ Boeheim_Ball 2016-5955 Prime Time Horns, delivered! Coach Boeheim even gave them a shout out calling them “The best band in Central New York!” Let’s hear those Horns Prime Time!

Last, but definitely not least, M. Lemp’s Jewelers $20,000 diamond necklace raffle, what a dreamy necklace! Juli got to happily wear it, but wasn’t so happy to take it off.  “What a lady what a night” ana gil taylor_Boeheim Ball_raffle

Speaking of wonderful ladies, a shout out is in order for Kelly Taylor, Foundation Administrator and event planner extraordinaire.  Here is a picture of Juli, Kelly and all of the wonderful volunteers. ana gil-taylor_ Boeheim_Ball 2016-6128FB ana gil-taylor_ Boeheim_Ball 2016-6135FB

Brazzlebox Small Business Summit: ana gil-taylor recap

Brazzlebox, “The applied social network for small and home-based businesses” This is how Glen Zinszer, Brazzlebox founder and CEO describes it.  After having the pleasure of chatting with Glen and his wonderful communications manager Sarynna Cruz, I can confidently say, Brazzlebox is more than an applied social network for small and home- based businesses.  On November 4th, 2015 Brazzlebox put together a local event in Syracuse, NY, which touched more than social media.
The way the Small business summit was laid-out and its content is an indication that Brazzlebox has done its homework and understands small business needs, at all levels.Brazzlebox-0811

The event opened up with a great panel discussion moderated by Sarah Roche, co-founder of Platypus TV,  which touched on a variety of topics such as, the importance of a business plan, Dan Rickman, SBA, believing in yourself and faith, DeBorah Little, Lil’MorStix, being confident and using your entrepreneurial fire to fuel your way to success, Mark Dengler, Research & Marketing Strategist, Inc, be your own cheerleader, Evin Robinson, New York On Tech, be humble and open to learn from others, Mac Cummings, Co-Founder/CEO Terakeet Corporation.

After the panel discussion, there was a nice little break for networking, followed by a fun and energetic presentation by Juli Boeheim of the Brazzlebox_ ana gil taylor-0830Jim & Juli Boeheim Foundation on the importance of community involvement and the personal rewards she has gained from being part of her beautiful Syracuse community. Jim Boeheim, Brazzlebox_ ana gil taylor-0851Head Coach of Syracuse men’s Basketball  and also her husband –  surprised the crowd by coming on stage and joining Juli – agreed by saying something like this –  Donating your time to your community will pay double your dividends, guaranteed, get involved.

Glen came on stage with motivational messages for everyone in the audience;  Brazzlebox_ ana gil taylor-0888I specifically enjoyed and related to the message he delivered to students – it went something like this-  It doesn’t matter what rank you graduate in, what matters is where you want to go and what you do with that desire. Glen had success stories after success stories which certainly defined who he is and what he has achieved and has yet to.

The crowd already hyped up from all real and relate-able success stories, gave Daymond John a resounding cheer as he came on stage. His story is inspirational, reachable, funny, and thought provoking. Of the many messages he had for 1100 attendees, the one that resonated with me were, you can have all the reaches in the world, but will be the poorest man without your family. Family first! The second was, keep swimming, no matter what, keep swimming. Brazzlebox-0929_D_ana gil taylor

An enormous congratulations goes out to Brazzlebox for putting on such fantastic event for small business owners and the general public. Summarizing, below are my awesome take take-a-ways.

1.There is nothing scarier that the thought of losing your family – Family First!

2. Let your desire to success lead you to where you want to go, then do it again.

3. Community involvement leads to a great return on your investment

4. Keep swimming

5. Take crowd selfies.. ha!

I leave you with a quick video recap by Officially-Unofficial and gil-taylor Productions.

Jim and Juli Boeheim Foundation: Basket Ball 2015: My recap

This year marks the Jim and Juli Boeheim foundation 16th anniversary Basket Ball.  Held at the Turning Stone, in Verona NY.

Basket Ball Gala 15-0224eNo doubt, the Gala is their biggest fund raiser. They go all out for their supporters.   Starting with an intimate VIP reception hosted by Joyce Hergenhan where about 300 VIP guests get to enjoy three open bars, delicious looking Hors d’oeuvres, and hang out with the Syracuse Basketball team.

Basket Ball Gala 15-0195Basket Ball Gala 15-0190This year they added the “Orange carpet experience” where their VIP guests, definitely dressed to impress, got to take their photo with Jim and Juli Boeheim.

Basket Ball Gala 15-0162Juli herself did not disappoint her fans.  She looked stunning in her Armani dress; without a doubt one of the most beautiful women at the Gala.

Basket Ball Gala 15-1460e2The Atrium was adorned by a great variety of silent auction items sure to please all bid ranges. From sports memorabilia to beautiful painting to handsome bow-ties and professional head shots.Basket Ball Gala 15-0258A great hit for SU Basketball fans was getting their pictures taken with the team, made even better because they got to take a hard copy of the photo home! – thanks to Best Eye Photography.

Basket Ball Gala 15-1274

Their live auction was one of my favorite parts at last year’s Basket Ball;  and it didn’t disappoint this year.  Jim and Juli’s stage dynamic is phenomenal already, bring in Bob Costas! – a recipe for a fun live auction! Basket Ball Gala 15-1427 Basket Ball Gala 15-1464Live auction Items included, trips to the final four, to dinner with Jim and Juli, to great Dome seats. The really fun part was the auctioned off Rakeen Christmas, Jim Boeheim, and Bob Costas’ custom made J. Allen inspired bow-ties.  All three bow-ties were signed live by Rakeem, Costas and Jim.Basket Ball Gala 15-1534Basket Ball Gala 15-1548Of course the bid war started high for Rakeem’s bow-tie! The bidder bargained well and got all three signed bow-ties for $10K. However, as Jim often does he gave away a second bow-tie, this one was a basketball themed bow-tie which also went for $10K. The energy was so great, some of the players got on the floor to help collect the bids. Great, great time.   Basket Ball Gala 15-1562Basket Ball Gala 15-0355blog

My second favorite part was the energy of all guests on the dance floor!  Everyone was enjoying themselves so much! Guests of all ages, smiling, singing along, dancing to the great music of Prime Time Horns.  – Not even Jim and Juli could resist the dance floor call.  It was so hard to contain myself – I love to dance!!

Basket Ball Gala 15-0516Last, but certainly not least, the raffle! Donated by M. Lemp Jewelers– a beautiful pink sapphire and diamond bracelet. It was a a bit of a nail bitter as the first number called was either in the bathroom or had already left – oops!!  The crowd around was very liberal showing their support to pull another ticket! The next ticket pulled… Jim called it a couple of times.. then one winner yelled out!…..but it wasn’t the winner either.. soooo on again.. the crowd even more energetic and hopeful cheering to pull another ticket.  A number gets pulled out one more time… FINALLY, a winner! Her smile was as shiny and beautiful as the diamonds themselves.

At the end of the night, I am sure with tired feet, but still looking amazing, guests came out to claim their bids, and so it goes..Every guest came in happy and left happier! Their  donation goes to a great cause – to enrich the lives of kids in need as well as to support cancer research and advocacy.

Basket Ball Gala 15-0591The Basket Ball 2015 was a great success thanks to the event organizer and foundation administrator,  Kelly Taylor and her team of volunteers.  I would also like to give a shout out to the Turning Stone security team and staff it is always great to work with them!.  They are all equally helpful and a joy to work with.

Jim and Juli Boeheim Foundation Basket Ball: Event Photographer, Syracuse NY

I have had the pleasure of photographing various types of fun events, however, the Basket Ball fundraising event held by The Jim and Juli Boeheim Foundation has been by far the most satisfying to me.  Not only because it was extremely fun but because the Foundation concentrates on two issues which are very important to me, helping children in our community by financially supporting the Boys & Girls club and research and advocacy for cancer, specifically pediatric. The Boys & Girls club gives children a place to go after school so their minds are occupied with constructive and safe activities. I grew up in the Dominican Republic a beautiful Island full of happy people, gorgeously breath-taking beaches and history, as well as a high poverty rate. Growing up, I was lucky to have a great foundation from my parents;  My cousins were not so lucky.  They got involved in unsafe activities because they had no place to go after school but the streets.  I believe 100% that if we provide children with a safe outlet where they can be themselves, we will have amazing adults.  It was so rewarding to see how open guests were to place bids on auction items knowing the money will go towards these two very important causes. The Gala or “Basket Ball” as it was titled, was an amazing event, full of happy and well dressed guests. Jim & Juli greeted their guests as they came in;  making happy fans happier.

Guests also had the option of taking photos with the Basketball team, an option that was VERY popular.

The live auction was very animated, Jim and Juli were hilarious!

The highlight of the live auction though, was the auction of the jacket Jim Boeheim wore when he was ejected from the game against Duke.  Coach Boeheim was presented with a “tear-away” blazer which he used to re-enact the scene from the, Feb. 22nd 2014, Duke game. The jacket auctioned off for $14,000! Money that will go straight into our community!

Dinner and dancing to the band, Prime Time Horns, followed.  The band played awesome music; the dance floor was packed the entire time! The crowd kept asking for “one more song” after another. What a great time.

I can’t close without mentioning the event coordinator, Kelly Taylor.  The event which hosted about 850 guests ran flawlessly thanks to her and her team.  They were all on point for every aspect of the event. Any questions I had, they knew the answer or guided me to the person who knew. It was a very nice experience working with them.
